Chillums are one of the greatest innovations to hit the smoking accessories world in recorded history. They are a small cylindrical device that has a large opening on one end, and a narrow opening on the other. This allows you to fill the larger opening with the material that you desire to smoke. The first chillums were used by monks, in India. Mostly made out of bamboo, and other wood, that that they would carve into that cylindrical shape. They used them for tobacco mostly for spiritual purposes. As history progresses the chillum’s influence spread quickly across the world and its now used with marijuana, weed, cannabis or whatever you call your favorite herb. Much like how videos go viral today, you can’t keep a good thing hidden for long.
We are very happy that they did spread quickly because the modern creators of smoking devices have taken the chillum to new heights. The styles of chillums are so diverse in the colors and shapes that are used. Instead of a hand-carved piece of wood, today you can expect to find high-quality borosilicate glass shaped into beautiful shapes.
The thing that makes a glass chillum pipe different from say a hand pipe is the fact that once you fill the larger opening with your material, there is no carb to control the airflow within that bowl. Whereas with a pipe once you light and inhale on the piece, there is a carb hole that allows you to control the amount of air flowing through your piece. So you can properly clear it. That is why chillums are known as a much more intense experience than using a hand pipe. Because the rips tend to start closer to your mouth and feel harsh overall. Don’t let this fact scare you though, the added benefit of portability these devices bring to your life makes them worth the trade-off.
The top three reasons we love chillums are…
- Perfect Adventure Companion
- Small Compact Size
- Big Bowls, Ready To Load
How do I use a chillum?
Using them are super simple. However, let us go over some easy tips so you can get the most out of your smoking experience! Let us break it down into three easy-to-follow steps. Fill. Angle It. Light It up.
When you are filling your chillum it is important to not overfill or pack it. Because they don’t have the added feature of a carb to let air in they don’t get as much airflow as the normal hand pipe. When you overpack a chillum bowl you get rid of all of the space that air would normally fill up. Making it almost impossible to pull from. You can still load big bowls, just don’t pack it down too tightly!
Before you light your pipe you are going to want to consider the angle of your bowl! Is your bowl pointed towards the sky, straight forward, or facing down? The main reason you want to consider the angle of your bowl is that you don’t want any of your freshly packed bowls to fall out! Trust us. When this happens it rarely happens over a place where you can salvage your lost material. A good rule of thumb is to keep your chillum at a 45-degree angle! This will help you avoid that terrible situation.
Lastly, you light it up! This is the most straightforward part of using a chillum. However, we still have a couple of valuable tips for you before you do it. When you are lighting make sure to be aware of where your fire is in the space around you. Is your hair near the flame? Are you about to burn your eyebrows off? Our point is to always be careful when using your piece!
The second bit of advice we have when administering the flame to your chillum is to corner it! Cornering is the nicest thing you can do for the other people joining in on your session. To properly corner, you light your lighter away from the bowl and slowly bring the edge of the flame to a corner of your bowl while inhaling. If done correctly everyone in your session should get some fresh greens! Chillums can be difficult to do this with as they have smaller bowls than your average hand pipe.
Dugouts / One-Hitters
Dugouts are one of our favorite smoking accessories on the market today. Much like the chillum, they help you achieve a level of portability like no other! Dugouts have also been called one-hitters, or bats. Whatever you call them, you are going to love the portability that comes with the dugout. They also act as a container for your material as well! Which means you are getting a solid two for one. So, what is a dugout exactly? We will explain below.
What is a dugout?
Dugouts come in many different shapes, sizes, and materials. So we understand why you would want to be sure you know everything there is about dugouts before you bring one home. A dugout is a device that holds both the material that you wish to smoke and the device that you are going to use to smoke it. Which is typically a one-hitter. Dugouts normally come in a rectangular box shape, with a lid, and two holes. One of the holes in this box of sorts holds the one-hitter. The other is where your smoking material is housed. Having both the smoking device and the material to be smoked conveniently stored in one pocket-sized box is exactly how this device provides a new level of portability to your sessions. The top three reasons we love dugouts are…
- Insanely Portable
- Typically Pocket-Sized
- For the Adventurer in You
How do I use a dugout?
Using a dugout may seem a little intimidating for the first time. At Fat Buddha Glass, we want the smoking experience to be as accessible as possible, we work towards this goal by sharing valuable information on how to use our devices! When using dugout, much like a chillum there are a few tips that will make your experience run a whole lot smoother. They are, tightly pack your storage chamber, keep your one-hitter clean, and always be sure to clear your one-hitter right after you rip it.
When you tightly pack the storage chamber on your one-hitter you prevent the material inside from falling out from the accident. When you are filling up your dugout take your one-hitter and push the material down nice and tight.
Keeping your one-hitter clean is the biggest step you can take to keep your smoke sessions running smoothly. Because one-hitters don’t use any water to filter your smoke they tend to get gunky fairly quickly. This is also due to the concentrated smoke going through the narrow tube of the one-hitter. When the gunk builds up enough you won’t be able to pull any air through the device. Preventing you from getting the experience you want!
The best way to prevent your smoking sessions from being stopped in their tracks while using a dugout is to immediately clear out your one-hitter after use. If you tap it on your lighter while it is still hot the burned material should fall out with no problem. If you wait much longer than that you run the risk of clogging your one-hitter.
Hopefully, these tips will help you get the most of your device! We wish that someone would have told us these useful tips when we first started using a one-hitter. This is why we gladly pass this knowledge on to you! Now go enjoy your new device. Or pick one up today, and begin a new era of portable smoke sessions.
Chillum and One Hitter FAQs
Are chillums better than hand pipes?
This is a very subjective question. So we will present to you the pros and cons of each piece, so you can rationally make your own educated decision! Chillums are great for portability, and for smoking smaller amounts of materials. However, they tend to get dirtier quicker. Chillums tend to be harsher than hand pipes because you are closer to the smoke as it burns. Hand Pipes are larger than chillums and can pack more in the bowls. Typically hand pipes are better for sharing. However, they aren’t nearly as portable as chillums. Both items are great, in their own ways. Our best answer to this question is to try them both for yourself to find out!
Are there different styles of chillums?
Yes, there are many different styles out there. Different shapes, sizes, and colors. This may sound overwhelming but what it really means is that you have a whole world of possibilities when it comes to finding the right chillum for you! At Fat Buddha Glass we have done our best to bring to you a wide array of chillum styles so you can find a piece that you have a connection with.
Do you need to clean chillums and one-hitters?
Yes! Cleaning is absolutely vital for any pipe. You won’t be able to use your piece for very long if you don’t regularly clean your piece. Another fact about cleaning your glass is that the more frequently you do it. The easier it is to clean! If you don’t clean your chillum and glass one hitter pipe regularly, it will build up a large amount of gunk that will clog the narrow tube to the mouthpiece. This prevents you from pulling any air through the piece. It also is extremely disgusting. So keep your piece clean, and you are sure to have a smooth session. Every time. Not only that, but it will extend the life of your piece exponentially.
How do I clean a chillum and dugout?
Cleaning a chillum and a dugout can be quite a difficult task due to the small size of the piece, and the narrow tubes within the piece. The best way to clean your pieces is with cleaners made specifically for the job. Here at Fat Buddha, we have many different cleaning options, so take a look around and find the right one for you. You can also clean your piece with household items. Salt and isopropyl alcohol is the best household combination to clean the gunk off of all of your glass pieces. You can grab a small plastic bag, but in the Salt and isopropyl alcohol and then put in your dirty piece. Let it soak. Then shake it! After you pull your piece out rinse with hot water to push off any stubborn gunk bits. Repeat this process until you have yourself a freshly clean piece!
